Millars provides turn-key, fully integrated solutions across commercial projects of all sizes. We are able to offer this seamless approach by having dedicated Design, Install and Service teams:

Design

Leading with a design phase ensures that full consultation occurs across all internal and external teams, so that there is a unified approach to the project. Millars have a Registered Engineer responsible for the Design aspect. With over 40 years’ experience he ensures that the consistency and integrity are maintained from the install through to maintenance.

Install

The Install (or build) team is the bulk of our operation and ensures we have the right people to deliver the project on time and on budget. The Install team will traditionally be involved on working on a totally new build, a re-fit/refurbishment or a fit-out. Our team culture ensures that we have the best people, that they are fully aware of all on-job requirements, are using the best equipment and know the latest technologies. We subscribe to the highest industry standards of Health & Safety.

Service

Maintenance ensures the ongoing ‘life’ of a project. It is often a natural decision for our clients to use us for the ongoing maintenance of a building as we know it well from the initial project. We also provide a commercial servicing and maintenance option for those who require risk avoidance and high-levels of electrical continuity in the properties they manage. Our Design, Install and Service teams ensure the full integrity, single-source, consistency, efficiency and quality of the projects. This mix allows our clients to consider other factors beyond simply price: time, experience, knowledge, quality of work, innovation, management of risk, single point of responsibility/accountability and delivery capabilities. Within our team we have several Independently Qualified Persons (IQP) for building warrant of fitness work and also Electrical Inspectors for any inspection services required.

Millars are very proud of this particular project because this was a fitout within an iconic, historically significant building. The Art Deco building in Stout Street has been a prominent Wellington landmark since it was first built in 1939. The New Zealand Defence Force was previously housed in the building. This was no ordinary fitout. The resulting challenges were complex and presented major constraints as all the work undertaken had to recognise the architectural significance of the building and fuse that with the need to provide a contemporary work environment for MBIE. The work synthesised old with new and recognised the particular heritage features of the building. The project showcases the best of technology, products and materials that allow such features as energy efficient light fittings and wireless emergency lighting monitoring. The building won Gold in the Restoration category for the 2015 Commercial Projects Awards.

This was another heritage building refurbishment; this time of the old Bank of New Zealand Headquarters built at the turn of the last century. Another magnificent Wellington landmark this project involved a fitout which married ground floor retail with offices above. Again attention was paid to certain architectural features of the building – for example replicating the period internal lighting in order to capture and retain the building’s original aesthetics.

A bit of history

Maritime Tower

This was a slightly different project in so far as fitouts are concerned. It was a new, integrated install, through to full tenant fitout. It won the 2007 NZ Institute of Architects Commercial and Industrial category award.

BP House

This is really where it all began. 1968. With this install Frank Millar announced to the Wellington market it was here – and here to stay. It was a major project, even by today’s standards, and we continued to maintain the electrical services for the building until it was, unfortunately closed in 2013 because of earthquake damage and demolished in 2015. It was almost like losing an old friend.

Royal Thai Embassy

The building started out as the Lion Tavern in Wellington’s Molesworth Street. The 1970’s slab reinforced concrete structure of the tavern building was retained, and refurbished with a new building envelope. The building was extended to add a further level and a new three-storey wing was constructed as a separate building. Working with the shell of the old tavern naturally presented its own, unique set of problems. A consumer sub-station was installed to provide sufficient electrical capacity. The very large top floor added to the shell brought its own challenges in providing the right seismic restraints for the in ceiling services. The building was also transitioned from standard to LED lighting to ensure greater efficiency.

This project started very much with a blank sheet of paper. The biggest challenge was getting the right lighting for the interior of the hangar which had a 10 metre high stud. There were also some unique features of the project, for example: the large, external floodlights at the front of the hangar and wind monitoring equipment we commissioned from the UK. The floodlights are used to highlight the apron in front of the hangar during nighttime activities. The wind speed indicator monitors the wind velocity to ensure the front doors are not operated with wind speed is excessive.
